Araki. Tokyo Lucky Hole

Beskrivelse

Discover the provocative world of Tokyo’s underground sex scene in Nobuyoshi Araki’s compelling photo collection. Capturing a unique era before strict regulations changed the landscape, this book offers an intimate glimpse into Japan’s adult entertainment culture of the late 1970s and early 1980s.

An unfiltered photographic journey through Tokyo’s vibrant and controversial sex industry.

The story begins in 1978 at a seemingly ordinary coffee shop near Kyoto, where rumors spread that the waitresses wore no panties beneath their miniskirts. This sparked a nationwide trend, with similar venues emerging, drawing crowds of men willing to pay triple for the chance to be served by these daring young women.

Shortly after, a new sensation took hold: no-panties “massage” parlors. The services became increasingly eccentric, ranging from fondling through coffin holes to catering to commuter-train fetishists. Among the most infamous spots was a Tokyo club named “Lucky Hole,” where a plywood partition separated clients and hostesses, with a small hole allowing intimate encounters.

Using “Lucky Hole” as his title, Nobuyoshi Araki documents this flourishing scene in over 800 photographs. His work captures the pleasure seekers and providers of Tokyo’s Shinjuku district just before the 1985 New Amusement Business Control and Improvement Act shut down many such establishments.

Through reflections in mirrors, glimpses behind bed sheets, scenes of bondage, and wild orgies, Araki presents a vivid, poetic, and sometimes humorous portrayal of this bacchanalian era. The images also invite reflection, offering a nuanced look at a fleeting moment in Japan’s cultural history.
