Beskrivelse

Astrology has fascinated humanity for millennia, connecting celestial movements with our lives. This book traces its rich history and cultural impact through stunning visuals.

A captivating visual journey through the ancient and evolving practice of Western astrology.

Since the dawn of civilization, people from diverse cultures and beliefs have looked to the stars for guidance and meaning. Astrology, the study of how celestial bodies influence human life, has inspired awe, worship, and a deeper understanding of ourselves and the world.

While many recognize astrology today through horoscopes, its roots extend back to ancient Mesopotamia. As detailed by Andrea Richards in this volume from TASCHEN’s Library of Esoterica series, astrology and astronomy were once intertwined sciences. The Great Pyramid’s King’s Chamber aligns with constellations, Persian scholars established early observatories, and even Galileo created horoscopes for the Medici family. However, with the rise of the Enlightenment and modern science, astrology moved to realms where mystery remained, influencing literature, art, and psychology. Renowned figures such as Goethe, Byron, and Blake drew inspiration from it, and later movements like Theosophy and New Age spirituality helped bring astrology into the mainstream.

Edited by Jessica Hundley, this vibrant visual history of Western astrology reveals the symbolic significance behind hundreds of images. From Egyptian temples and illuminated manuscripts to contemporary artworks by artists like Alphonse Mucha, Hilma af Klint, Arpita Singh, and Manzel Bowman, the book’s sequence reflects the planets’ rotation and the zodiac wheel. Astrology celebrates the stars and their mysterious sway over our daily lives.
