Fashioners Of Faith

Beskrivelse

Danish hymn-writing holds a unique place in the culture, deeply woven into moments of both happiness and grief. Singing together is a cherished tradition in Denmark, embraced in both everyday and religious settings.

This anthology showcases the work of four key figures who shaped Danish faith through their hymns.

Danish hymns are more than just songs; they form a vibrant tradition that Danes turn to during life’s highs and lows. Singing a familiar hymn often opens gatherings, regardless of one’s religious beliefs, highlighting the communal spirit. Phrases from these hymns, like Kingo’s well-known line ‘Sorrow and joy hand in hand go together,’ have become part of everyday speech.

This collection aims to present a representative selection from four influential hymn writers in Danish history. While many Danes recognize their hymns, the full versions and the breadth of their work might surprise readers. The English translations offer non-Danish speakers worldwide a window into this important part of Denmark’s religious and cultural heritage, perhaps inspiring some to explore the original texts as well.
