From Yeast to Universe offers a vibrant and kaleidoscopic view of Danish research achievements, spanning the natural sciences, humanities, and social sciences. The book presents 150 research stories, many originating from modest beginnings but ultimately transforming how we perceive the world and ourselves.

These examples demonstrate how open-ended basic research lays the groundwork for major scientific advances, even when researchers start without a clear idea of what they might discover. Richly illustrated, the book reveals the process of knowledge creation, development, and its far-reaching impact beyond academic settings like universities, laboratories, fieldwork, and archives.

Historian of science Kristian Hvidtfelt Nielsen serves as the chief editor, while science journalist Lone Frank conducts interviews with top researchers about the evolution of research and the key questions science faces today. This publication commemorates the 150th anniversary of the Carlsberg Foundation.
