An in-depth look at Donald Duck’s evolution as one of Disney’s most beloved icons.

This vibrant publication takes you through nine decades of Donald Duck’s life, showcasing his rise as Disney’s most popular creation alongside Mickey Mouse. Beginning with his first appearance in the Silly Symphony short film The Wise Little Hen on June 9, 1934, the book follows Donald’s adventures across cartoons, comics, television, and theme parks.

Thanks to exclusive access to Disney’s extensive archives and both public and private collections, the authors reveal Donald’s story through rare concept art, story sketches, background paintings, animation frames, comic illustrations, and historical photographs. The book highlights the contributions of all key artists who shaped Donald’s character in film and comics, including a special tribute to Carl Barks, the legendary storyteller behind the “Duck Man,” featuring previously unseen early storyboard drawings.

Donald Duck holds a unique place in comic history as the most frequently printed character outside the superhero genre and has appeared on screen more than any other Disney figure. Since the 1950s, Duckburg has blossomed into a global community, with artists from America and around the world continuing to bring Donald’s stories to life.

As Carl Barks once described him, “He is everything, he is everybody; he makes the same mistakes that we all make.” Donald’s frequent misfortunes are exactly what have made him a beloved figure to audiences worldwide.
